Somebody once said, "There are no dumb questions, only dumb people.'' And we find that to be a bit harsh. At the same time, what is our response to the idea that the Dallas Cowboys should, in the wake of the Aaron Rodgers injury that puts him out for the season, trade Cooper Rush to the New York Jets?
Well ... that's dumb.
“I can’t imagine what it would (take to make that type of trade),'' said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, answering a not-dumb question from our pals on 105.3 The Fan. "The facts are ... we could need Rush (to play in games). ... (So a trade of Rush) would be very unlikely.''
Again, the idea is floating out there. "Shan & RJ'' have access to the decision-maker in Jones. So you ask the not-dumb question.
Now, what the public will do with the answer, especially when choosing to ignore it, is somebody else's problem. But that is indeed what some are doing. Even supposedly-serious-minded The Athletic has put Rush, Dak Prescott's valued backup, on a list of prospective Jets targets as they are scrambling to find another quarterback to be Zach Wilson’s backup.
Let them scramble. And why? Let's see ... Who do the Rodgers-less Jets play this week?
Oh. The Rodgers-less Jets play the Cooper Rush's Dallas Cowboys.
So to get this straight: The Jets are desperate. They need to do this now ... with Tom Brady or Colin Kaepernick or Nick Foles or Carson Wentz or Cooper Rush. And so the Cowboys offer to help them out? On the eve of playing them?
Trading Rush - barring of course some team offering a gigantic bonanza - simply isn't in play here. And it damn sure isn't in play at a time when he could in the most literal sense come back to haunt the Cowboys this Sunday.
We've seen it written that "Rumors are the Jets are making phone calls to everyone, from retired players like Tom Brady to teams like the Dallas Cowboys, inquiring if they may be interested in a trade.''
We have no information that such a rumor is true.
We've also seen it written that Dallas could find Rush to be expendable because the Cowboys just traded for Trey Lance ... meaning that Super Bowl-hungry Dallas is prepared, in the event of a Dak injury, to hand this team over to a failed youngster who just got here a few days ago.
There is no logic that makes that true.
Would Dallas trade Lance? That would make slightly more sense ... But why does New York need to spend on a third-stringer who at this point might not be better than the existing backup, journeyman Tim Boyle?
Jerry Jones was handed the question. He is offering the answer, saying that the vulnerability of any No. 1 QB (Dak and the rest) requires quality at the No. 2 spot.
"We've needed (Rush in the past),'' Jones said. "Boy, especially when you got all the promise we got, to compromise yourself with the depth at that position would be very unlikely.''
