Cowboys vs. Jets: Who's 'Emergency' QB for Week 2?

Aaron Rodgers is injured and likely done for the season. Former first-round pick Zach Wilson is now the New York Jets quarterback of record, as he helped the Jets engineer a Week 1 OT win over Buffalo and now comes to DFW to lead New York against the 1-0 Dallas Cowboys.

Amid a week full of speculation about the Jets acquiring a new QB - including the goofiest rumor of all, that Dallas would trade Cooper Rush to the team the Cowboys are about to play - for the foreseeable future they've got vet journeyman Tim Boyle already on the roster serving as Wilson's backup.

But the Jets enter the weekend with no third-string quarterback under contract. So ... who would the Jets be turning to in the event of a QB emergency?

The answer bounces us back to an old friend of Rodgers' ... and an old friend of the Cowboys.

That emergency guy is none other than wide receiver Randall Cobb ... which can't cause New York to have a great deal of just-in-case confidence here.

The 1-0 Cowboys are feeling pretty secure in their QB situation right now, and in their offense overall. ... in part as a result of the 40-0 win last week over the Giants, which allowed Dallas to keep the "Texas Coast Offense'' fairly vanilla.

"I'm looking forward to it, but I wouldn't mind another 16-point lead — obviously that serves nice," said Prescott, who once counted Cobb among his "America's Team'' receivers. "You get to keep some of your tricks in your bag and not show everything that you need to. But knowing we'll be playing indoors (at AT&T Stadium) and knowing it's going to be better conditions, and to get the passing game going, yeah, a lot of excitement."

And "excitement'' over Cobb? He did start four college games at quarterback for Kentucky in 2008 and was a star quarterback in high school. And even in the NFL - where he was with Dallas in 2019 - he's tossed the ball around a bit, as he had four NFL passing attempts (with one completion) for the Packers team coached by Mike McCarthy, who is now the boss in Dallas.

So ... Tom Brady? Colin Kaepernick? Cooper Rush? No, no, no. Randall Cobb is far more likely to throw a Jets pass than all of those guys put together.
